Guide/Entrance Matting
How to choose a commercial entrance mat
Match three things to your site: the traffic and soil at the door, the right material for that job (scraper, wiper or combined), and a mat long enough for four to six footfalls. For a branded first impression, add a custom logo mat. Here is the full framework we use with clients across Australia.
Start with the three-zone system
Effective entrance matting is not one mat, it is a system that stops dirt and moisture in stages before they reach your floors. Specifying all three zones removes the most soil and water, which protects your flooring and reduces slip risk.
Outside the door
A coarse, heavy-duty scraper mat or grille that knocks off grit and heavy soil before it gets to the doorway.
In the doorway
A scraper or combined mat that removes remaining soil and begins absorbing moisture from the sole.
Inside the door
A soft, absorbent wiper mat that dries the shoe and holds fine dust. This is where a logo mat usually sits, so it doubles as branding.
Match the mat to your traffic and environment
The right mat depends on the door. Use this as a starting point, then talk to us about your exact site.
| Your situation | What to look for | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| High foot traffic (retail, health, education, transport) | Durable construction, heavy-duty backing, combined scrape and wipe | Commercial entrance mats |
| Wet or coastal entries | Fast moisture absorption plus drainage and slip resistance | Absorbent and drainable mats |
| Industrial or muddy sites | Aggressive scraping, open construction that hides grit | Rubber scraper matting |
| Branded lobbies and reception | Printed logo, colour match, sharp edges | Custom logo mats |
| Standing workstations near the door | Cushioning underfoot for staff, not just soil control | Anti-fatigue mats |
Entrance mat materials compared
| Material | Strengths | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon or polypropylene wiper | High moisture and fine-dust absorption, holds colour, prints well for logos | Zone 3 interiors, reception, branded mats |
| Rubber scraper | Aggressive grit removal, very hard wearing, drains water | Zone 1 exteriors, industrial and wet entries |
| Combined rubber and textile | Scrapes and wipes in one mat, strong backing | Single-mat entries and doorways |
| Coir | Natural look, good scraping | Sheltered heritage and residential entries |
What size do you need, and how is it fitted?
Undersized matting is the most common reason an entrance still tracks in dirt. Get the size and the fit right and the mat does its job.
- Four to six footfalls. A visitor should take at least four full steps across the matting before reaching bare floor, and six is better in wet or high-traffic sites.
- Full door width. Match the mat to the whole opening so people cannot step around it.
- Surface-laid or recessed. Surface mats sit on the floor and are quick to install and easy to lift for cleaning. A recessed matwell sets the mat flush into the floor with no trip edge, ideal for high-end and high-traffic foyers, and is usually specified at fit-out or refurbishment.
- Made to measure. If a standard size will not fit, we make mats to your dimensions. Book a free site measure and quote if you want us to check the space.
Standard mat or custom logo mat?
A plain commercial mat handles pure soil and moisture control. A custom logo mat does that job and turns your entrance into branding, which is why reception areas, showrooms and franchises specify them. Our PrintPlush logo mat prints full-colour artwork with colour matching and starts from $377.30 per square metre, with a free digital proof before anything goes to production.

How much do commercial entrance mats cost?
Price depends on size, material, backing grade, and whether the mat is standard or custom. Off-the-shelf mats are the most economical, while made-to-measure and custom logo mats are priced on specification. As a reference point, our PrintPlush custom logo mats start from $377.30 per square metre. Frequently asked questions
What is the best type of commercial entrance mat?
There is no single best mat, the right choice depends on the door. High-traffic interiors need an absorbent wiper mat, exterior and industrial doors need a rubber scraper, and many single-door entries are best served by a combined scrape-and-wipe mat. Branded lobbies add a custom logo mat in the interior zone.
How big should an entrance mat be?
Size the mat so a person takes at least four to six steps across it before reaching bare floor, and make it as wide as the full door opening so people cannot walk around it. Undersized matting is the most common cause of dirt still being tracked inside.
How much does a custom logo mat cost?
Custom logo mats are priced on size and specification. Our PrintPlush logo mats start from $377.30 per square metre and include a free digital proof. Request a quote for an exact price on your sizes.
Do you supply and install across Australia?
Yes. We deliver nationwide and offer professional installation, with experienced sales managers across VIC, SA, NSW, ACT, WA and QLD.
What is the difference between a scraper mat and a wiper mat?
A scraper mat uses a coarse or rubber surface to knock off heavy soil and grit, usually outside or in the doorway. A wiper mat uses an absorbent textile to dry the shoe and hold fine dust, usually just inside the door. A complete entrance uses both.
