A number of major shopping centres In Queensland have worked with The Mat Group to improve safety at escalator and travelator entry and exit points, where exposed metal surfaces can become highly slippery, particularly in wet weather conditions and high traffic environments.

These transition zones present an ongoing Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S) concern due to constant foot traffic, external exposure, and metal surfaces that increase slip risk at critical entry and exit points.

PROJECT NEED:

Shopping centres required a durable and effective solution to improve slip resistance at escalator and travelator entry and exit zones. The exposed metal surfaces in these areas were identified as high-risk slip points, particularly during wet conditions, creating safety concerns for both staff and visitors.

The solution needed to integrate seamlessly into existing infrastructure while maintaining a clean, professional finish suitable for large scale retail environments.

OUR SOLUTION:

The Mat Group supplied and installed Superguard heavy duty matting designed specifically for high traffic escalator and travelator entry and exit zones.

Unlike standard surface laid mats, the system was precision cut and installed directly into the escalator and travelator entry points, creating a flush, integrated finish rather than a loose laid solution. This approach ensured reliable slip resistance while maintaining a clean architectural appearance.

Clients include Vicinity Queens Plaza, Macarthur Central, and QIC Robina Town Centre, where the solution has also been incorporated into WH&S improvement planning due to its safety performance and effectiveness in high traffic retail environments.

THE IMPACT:

The installations have improved slip resistance and reduced risk at key escalator and travelator transition points across multiple shopping centres. High risk exposed metal surfaces have been replaced with a more stable and consistent walking surface suitable for continuous public use.

The integrated installation method has also improved overall presentation, delivering a neat, built-in finish that aligns with modern retail centre design standards. These upgrades have supported WH&S initiatives while improving safety outcomes for both staff and visitors in high traffic environments.
